50 come out for the Salem 5K

It was a beautiful morning for the Salem 5K, and about 50 people came out to run or walk in support of Goochland Young Life.

We're so grateful to Salem Baptist Church in Crozier for organizing a fun event and choosing YL to benefit. Thanks, too, for all the day's sponsors: Hickory Notch Grill, Chick-fil-A at Short Pump Town Center, LifeWay Christian Stores, Subway, Food Lion and Martin's.

Lindsay won the prize for Best Costume!

Kendra and John Lumpkins both took home trophies for their 5K times.

Even Caroline had a good time!

Welcome Ian!

Young Life has connected us with Ian McIntosh, who wants to move to Goochland as our new YL staffer! He's been involved with Young Life since 2004 when he went to Young Life's Saranac Village after his sophmore year in high school. He says, "It was the first time I was ever introduced to Chris in a real way. My life has never been the same." In his junior and senior years, he got involved in Campaigners and Club in his hometown of Rochester, NY. He spent summers volunteering at Saranac Villiage and Frontier Ranch on work crew as a cook and a server.

Ian stayed in Rochester for college and was trained and placed as a volunteer leader in Pittsford, NY, during his freshman year; for the rest of his college years, he worked part time for Young Life on student staff acting as team leader for the other Young Life leaders in Pittsford. "This gave me more time to build relationships with kids in Pittsford and have a little more responsibility." He spent summers at Saranac again, first on summer staff working on the ropes couse and the following summers hired as a summer intern, helping out in guest services and as the ropes intern.

After his May 2010 graduation, he was accepted as a year-long intern at YL's Crooked Creek Ranch. He's spent the last year there working in different roles with food service, guest services and maintenance. "It allowed me to see all aspects of Young Life's camping program." Fortunately for us, he decided he'd like to work in a field staff role, so when our staffer position opened up, he was available to step in. "I have been conitnually involved in Young Life since my sophmore summer," Ian says, because it has pushed me closer, stretched me more, and has helped put a profound desire to serve God in my heart."

Wishing Will Well

We've had to say good-bye to Will Cox, our terrific Young Life staffer who’s been so important to Goochland Young Life for the past two years.

Will was asked to take a position with increased responsibility with Young Life, and in September, he made the move east to become Chesapeake's Young Life Area Director. We know he'll do a great job.

This is a time of lots of change for Will -- because he's now engaged to his girlfriend Janis Bartkiewicz!  They're planning a wedding in January! (Here's their pic.) So please continue to pray for Will, with all these great things happending in his life.
